To break through David's hardened heart, God sends the prophet Nathan with a parable—a story designed to make the truth land harder than a direct statement ever could.
David's furious reaction to the parable reveals a sobering human reality: he had never been more right about someone else, yet he had never been more blind about himself. When Nathan delivers the ultimate reversal, "You are the man!", David is forced to face the music. His pure, unexcused confession, "I have sinned against the LORD," triggers an immediate outpouring of God's grace.
